It was a lovely Saturday morning and my cell phone rang. I jumped out of the bed, the moment I heard my friend's voice from the other side. She was an old friend of mine from Delhi who was in Guwahati on vacation visiting her grandparents. She wanted to make the most of her vacation and insisted me to plan a perfect Sunday for her. The moment she asked me to arrange a Sunday outing the only place that came to my mind was Mawphanlur village in Meghalaya. I have always heard of its beauty from my friends but have not got a chance to visit the place. I just couldn't wait for the next day because I was about to meet my friend after two long years and day trip to such a beautiful place is just the icing on the cake!
If you would like to satiate your desire for visiting serene places, then Mawphanlur village is the perfect place for you. Definitely, you will feel an eternal bliss walking through the village as serenity being distributed to the entire place in abundance. So, on Sunday as planned me along with my few other friends headed towards Mawphanlur to spend a beautiful day amidst natural surroundings. We started our journey a bit early at around 7 o’clock in the morning so that we can have plenty of time in our hands to explore the place. Finally after 4 hours ride (approx) we reached this beautiful place in Meghalaya. They charge Rs 10 or Rs 20 per person as an entry to the place.
We stepped down from our car and hurried towards a narrow paved road rolling upwards on the hill. The winding street took us through few huts and tiny lakes with bamboo bridges. Soon, we reached to the hilltop. It was indeed an awe-inspiring view-a moment out of this world. After all, we don't get the chance to witness a paradise of this kind quite frequently. This is Mawphanlur for you- a small village in Meghalaya concealing itself from the outside world.
Once at Mawphanlur, we kept walking up and down the hills, from one heaven to another with no particular destination. The mesmerizing natural beauty of the valleys, grasslands and the lakes stole our hearts totally. We also enjoyed hiking, fishing, kayaking and boating as we wanted to make the most of our visit. We were soon very hungry moving up and down and back to the same places. We had packed our foods and other necessary items for the day as there were no eating joints and shops nearby. The place also has few cottages which you can book if you want to stay overnight. They charge Rs 1600 without food. Foods are available on paid basis and are always negotiable.
Meghalaya has many such beautiful less explored places kept under its wrap, far away from the madding crowd. Mawphanlur is not so famous on the usual tourist circuit, so it gives a lot of relief to visit during the weekends. Including us there were only 2 or 3 visitor groups until we returned at 4 PM on that particular day. However, this place is fast gaining popularity and will see a rush of tourists soon. It was one of the best days and the best views that we had that day at this small paradise of Mawphanlur.
