Guwahati, September 25: Seven persons were killed, one went missing and five others injured as heavy rainfall triggered landslides and flash flood created havoc in Shillong and West Khasi Hills in Meghalaya this morning.
Five persons were feared dead in a landslide that occurred early Friday morning at Parmaw Dhobhi Ghat Laban in the city and damaged three wooden houses completely.
It was learnt that following five persons went missing after the landslide: Firoza Khan (40), D/O Late Jaan Mohamed khan; Reziya Ahmed (38), D/O Farid Ahmed; Ms Bela Ahmed (40), D/O Late Hasmed Ali; Imaded Nongrum (60), S/O Late Hayed Nongrum and Kayam Uddin (42), S/O MD Sakumia. All of them were residents of the houses damaged completely in the landslide.
All other occupants of the area were shifted to other safe place for the time being. Two occupants who were washed away, managed to come out of the nearby stream. They were identified as Md Hasmuddin (30), S/0 MD Rubbidin Mian and his elder brother Md. Azamuddin (35). They were provided emergency medical help by the 108 emergency service team at the site.
One injured in the landslide, Thomas Mylliemngap, S/O Samuel Myrthong was shifted to Shilong Civil Hospital for treatment.
In another incident, two persons were killed, one went missing and two others injured when because of flash flood and massive landslides that occurred in West Khasi Hills District on Friday after heavy rainfall that lasted for several days since Monday.
The flash flood and massive landslides caused traffic jam along Nongstoin and Mawkyrwat Road as well as on the National Highway from Nongstoin to Shillong.
The District’s Superintendent of Police informed that one Alto K 10 vehicle driven by Kennedy Kharsohnoh, R/O 3rd mile, Upper Shillong, while passing through Tiehsaw, Nongstoin and proceeding toward Nanbah submerged in the flood water resulting in the death of a minor girl and the driver due to drowning. Another female passenger of the vehicle went missing.
One women passenger was rescued by personnel of Fire and Emergency Services while and three other persons including two males and one female manage to save themselves from the fury of flash flood.
Meanwhile, three houses in Nongstoin and Upper New Nongstoin were totally damage by a heavy landslide while more than hundreds shops were totally damaged by the flash flood.
