Guwahati, Oct 19: Noted economist, founder Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of the city-based NEDFi and a former Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Dr Jayanta Madhab passed away at a city-based hospital here on Sunday night. He was 90.
His death has been widely mourned in the state and the region where he was associated with many leading organisations till his last days.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal condoling the death of Dr Madhab, termed it a great loss to the state and directed that mortal remains of the departed economist would be cremated with full state honour. Assam Chief Secretary, Kumar Sanjay Krishna has been asked to attend the funeral on behalf of Assam Government.
Dr Madhab had earlier served as the economic adviser to the Chief Minister of Assam during 2003 to 2009. He was handpicked by then finance minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh to head the North East Developmnt Finance Corporation Limited (NEDFi) as its founder CMD.
Hailing from Jorhat in Assam, Dr Madhab graduated from J B College there with honours in economics and completed his masters from Gauhati University. He took his doctorate degree from London School of Economics in Financial Management.
He started is professional career as financial adviser to Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority before joining ADB as a director.
