Guwahati, January 23: The Supreme Court asks the Centre, Amazon Prime Video and Excel entertainment Pvt Ltd to respond to a plea that the web series MIRZAPUR had ‘completely tarnished’ the historical and cultural image of the place by showing it as a ‘city of goons.’
Sujeet Kumar Singh, a resident of Mirzapur had filed the petition to protect the ‘historical and cultural value’ of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh. In the nine episode long web series tiled as MIRZAPUR, produced and launched by Excel Entertainment, Mirzapur is shown as the city of goons and adulteress.
The second season of the web series was released last year. The Bench headed by Chief Justice Sharad A. Bobde issued notices against the plea that alleged as an insult to the reach culture of the city. Though the plea has become infructuous as the web series had already been telecast, the bench however, has issued the notice as ‘such movies and web series are clear violation of the dictum of the Supreme Court to block the publication or transmission of obscene material in any electronic forms.’
