Guwahati, February 12: Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis at IIMShillong has recently signed an MoU with North Eastern Handloom and Handirafts Development Corporation (NEHHDC) for overall growth and development of the handloom and handicrafts sector in the North Eatern Region of India according to a PIB release. It is expected that the new initiative will provide a major fillip to the prospects and probabilities of the vast sector that is scattered mostly unorganized in the nook and corners of this region. 

Umden-Diwon declared as Meghalaya's 1st Eri Silk Village

Guwahati, Feb 13: The village of Umden-Diwon was declared as the first Eri Silk Village of Meghalaya, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced.

Sangma further said that this came as a recognition of the overall collective and unique achievements and initiative of the community, to inspire weavers and spinners and  enable it to further develop into a vibrant ‘Atmanirbhar village.’

Taking to Twitter, Sangma wrote, ‘Today, Umden-Diwon village is declared as #Meghalaya's 1st #EriSilkVillage, in recognition of the overall collective & unique achievements & initiative of the community, to inspire weavers & spinners & enable it to further develop  into a vibrant #AtmaNirbhar village.’

With over 70 per cent of full-time active weavers, Umden-Diwon has become known as the epicentre of Eri culture in Meghalaya. The village has carved a name for itself for their 'Ahimsa Peace Silk'.
