Guwahati, February 18 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the 'Mahabahu-Brahmaputra' via video conferencing saying the program will strengthen water connectivity across the region through the waters of the Brahmaputra.

Launching the project, PM Modi said that the Mahabahu Brahmaputra program has been started today to enrich the gift that many rivers have received in Assam, including the Brahmaputra and Barak.

The 8 km bridge connecting Kalibadi Ghat to Jorhat will become the lifeline of thousands of families of Majuli. This bridge is going to be a bridge of convenience and possibilities for you, the PM said.

The PM further said that over the years, the double engine government of the Center and Assam have tried to reduce both the geographical and cultural distances of the entire region. Physical and cultural integrity of the entire North East, including Assam, has been strengthened over the years.

The work related to connectivity on the Brahmaputra did not take place earlier. Because of this, connectivity in Assam and North East remained a challenge. With the blessings of Mahabahu Brahmaputra, fast work is now being done in this direction, the PM said.

Expressing gratitude to PM Modi for launch of Mahabahu Brahmaputra, Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter saying, "Grateful Hon PM Sri @narendramodi for launch of Mahabahu Brahmaputra ~ A towering step towards enabling seamless connectivity in #NorthEast.

It'll help promote river cruise tourism, generate employment and enable growth in local business."
