Guwahati, Feb 26: Sprint queen of the country, Hima Das was today appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Assam Police.
The celebrated athlete who hails from small town of Dhing in Nagaon district of Assam, was ceremonially handed over the appointment letter by DGP of Assam Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta in presence of the Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and a host of top police officials of the state in a function held here.
Receiving the appointment letter, Hima Das expressed her gratitude to the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior Cabinet Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma. An elated Hima Das promised to keep thriving for making the country shine in the track and field event in the international arena.
Assam police also handed over appointment letter to 597 Sub-Inspectors (Sis) in the same function.
• The recruitment process of 597 Sis including written examination to distribution of appointment letters completed in record 90 days.
• It happens to be the largest intake of SIs in Assam Police at one go. 288 out of 597 selected candidates are post-graduates, a record in itself.
• 277 of them are science graduates while 60 are engineers.
• 445 out of 597 scored marks between 50 to 60%, again a record and speaks volume of merit-based transparent recruitment.
• Average age profile is quite young - 69% candidates are below 25 years, youngest being the 22 years old while 31% are between 25 to 30 years.
• The selected SIs are from all the districts except Sadiya and Dima Hasao. Selected SIs represent almost all the communities and tribes of Assam.

Guwahati, Feb 11: Sprinter Hima Das thanked Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Finance and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after she was appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) on Thursday.
The decision was taken by CM Sonwal in a meeting with Council of Ministers at Janata Bhawan, Guwahati on Wednesday.

Known as 'Dhing Express', Hima became the first Indian woman and also the first-ever Indian athlete to win a gold medal in any format of a global track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds.
The 21-year-old sprinter had clinched five gold medals in 2019. She won the fifth medal at the Nove Mesto Athletics Meet on July 20, 2019.
Hima is presently preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics qualification at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala.

Hima Das will keep running for country: Rijiju after Assam govt appoints sprinter as DSP

New Delhi, February 11 : Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday said that sprinter Hima Das will continue running for the country even after the Assam government decided to appoint her as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the state.
The 21-year-old is currently preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics qualification at Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala. Rijiju further added that sportspersons are employed in different sectors and yet they continue to play.
"Many people are asking, what about Hima's sports career? She is training for Olympic qualification at NIS Patiala and will keep running for India. Our elite Athletes are employed in various jobs yet continue to play. Even after retirement, they will be engaged in promoting sports," Rijiju tweeted.
Earlier, Rijiju hailed the Assam cabinet's decision to appoint Hima as DSP.
"Well done! Assam Cabinet, headed by CM @sarbanandsonwal has decided to offer the post of DSP in Assam Police to sprinter queen @HimaDas8!" Rijiju had tweeted.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonwal in a meeting Council of Ministers (CoM) at Janata Bhawan, Guwahati on Wednesday decided to appoint ace sprinter Das as a DSP in the state.
The cabinet also amended the integrated sports policy of the state for the appointment of sportspersons as Class-I and Class-II officers in different departments of the state government.
"The CoM approved amendment to the Integrated Sports Policy for the State providing for appointment to medal winners of Olympics, Asian Games, CWG (Class 1) and medal winners of World Championships senior (Class 2) officers. Hima Das will be appointed as Deputy Superintendent," Sonowal tweeted.
Hima became the first Indian woman and also the first-ever Indian athlete to win a gold medal in any format of a global track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds.
Hima had clinched five gold medals in 2019. She won the fifth medal at the Nove Mesto Athletics Meet on July 20, 2019. She had clocked a timing of 52.09 seconds to complete the 400m race, registering her season-best timing. Hima also won gold in 200m in Tabor Athletic Meet.
Hima, known as 'Dhing Express', won three gold medals at different events - Klado Athletic Meet, Kunto Athletics Meet, and Poznan Athletics Grand Prix.
