Pobitora WLS, March 24: Rhino Research and Conservation Division (RRCD) of Aaranyak organised an outreach programme titled, Friends of Rhino’ on Tuesday for a group of students, living around the fringe areas of Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.
The students were facilitated a trip inside the rhino habitat for an exposure trip and orient them towards conservation of our state animal, the one-horned rhinoceros.
Under the leadership of Dr Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, CEO and Head, Rhino Research and Conservation Division (RRCD), Aaranyak, the campaign "Friends of Rhino" was initiated for creating awareness among the students living around the Rhino-bearing areas. In line with this campaign, about 20 selected students and teachers of Paschim Mayong High School were given an opportunity to visit the wildlife sanctuary and to learn about biodiversity conservation.
The programme was coordinated by Arif Hussain, Manager, RRCD, and graced by Mukul Tamuli, Range Officer, Bhim Bahadur Chetry, Deputy Ranger, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Swapan Nath, a senior journalist and conservation volunteer from Kaziranga.
Students were taught about Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, importance of forest and wildlife conservation including the one-horned rhino. They were told about the importance of conserving the one-horned rhinos and the role that younger generations was expected to play for long-term conservation of our rich biodiversity.
The students were accompanied by Jasabanta Das, Head Master and Arpana Saikia, Assistant teacher of the school. They were amazed to see the richness and ambience of the wildlife of the sanctuary for the first time in their life.

Guwahati, February 8: Assam Forest Department and Aaranyak successfully conducted the second “Annual Waterbird census 2021” at Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary (WLS) near here on Monday. The main objective of the census was to count waterbird species in order to generate data on birds and monitoring of these species for long term conservation.
In the year 2020, 64 waterbird species with more than 15 thousand individuals were recorded. This year, a total of 58 waterbird species with more than 24 thousand individuals were recorded.
The census was successfully conducted with active involvement of about 30 participants comprising of staffs from Forest Department, members & staffs of Aaranyak, students and faculty member of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati, representatives from other conservation organizations, local volunteers and birders.
Udayan Borthakur, a senior scientist with Aaranyak coordinated the census and briefed the participants on field procedures. Mukul Tamuli, Range Officer, Pobitora WLS coordinated various aspects of the census procedure.
Udayan Borthakur, Dr. Bibhuti P. Lahkar, senior scientist, Aaranyak, Dr. Namita Brahma, Faculty, TISS, Naba Choudhury of Bonoriya, Binod Deka and Nripen Nath of Maibong Eco Resort led 6 different teams that conducted the census. Zizina Resorts, and Pobitora Gypsy Safari Association offered helping hands to various aspects of organizing the event.
