Dibrugarh, 9 April: Smt. Shanti Gogoi, a prominent social activist of Assam, is the Founder of SEWA. She started the Organization in the year 2000, two years after the death of her husband Late Keshab Chandra Gogoi, ex-CM of Assam.
Smt. Shanti Gogoi was born on 30th August, 1934 to Sri Jogesh Chandra Borgohain and Smt. Padmakumari Gohain. Her father was a MLC in the late 1930s and her mother – Smt. Padmakumari Gohain was a Cabinet Minister in the Bimala Prasad Chaliha and Mahendra Mohan Choudhary’s cabinet.
All her five children have excelled in their respective spheres of activites and profession. Her eldest son Anjan Gogoi retired as Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force, her second son Ranjan Gogoi was the ex CJI and her youngest son Dr Nirjan Gogoi is a Consultant Urologist in U K. Her two daughters Indira Gogoi and Nandita Hazarika were members of the Assam Civil Services till their retirement recently .
She formed the Socio Educational Welfare Association (SEWA) to facilitate well being of the community in the light of a better world to live in. She was active as the founding President of SEWA for 16 years moulding and serving the organisation through her excellent leadership abilities and undertaking numerous initiatives that would ensure better prospects for the organization in the foreseeable future.
She was also associated with various social institutions and was an active member and advisor of Mahila Samiti and also acted as a president of All Assam Lekhika Samaroh Samiti for a short period.
She has also contributed to the literary world by authoring several books and articles. Her literary work include “Jugna Jiwanar Huwaroni” (1999), “Europor Mitha Huworon”(2009), “Padmakumari Gohainr Rosonahombhar”(2003) and the recent being “Sintar Jilikoni”(2012). She has received many recognition for her works and was awarded the “Labanya Hazarika Adarsha Matri Award” in 2013.
She breathed her last after a brief illness at the age of 87 year on 9th April 2021 at 12.12 am at Escorts Hospital New Delhi. Her last rites will be performed on 10th April at Dibrugarh.
