Assam to extend financial help to villagers to curb human trafficking

Guwahati, July 30: The Assam government has decided to work out a financial package for economic empowerment of families who have borne the brunt of human trafficking.

“The Assam government in coordination with the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) will work in creating economic package to utilise the services of the villagers of 10 villages which have borne the brunt of human trafficking. A scheme in this regard would be launched after August 15,” chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced during a programme at Bangtol in Chirang district on Friday.

The programme was held on the occasion of World Day against Trafficking in Persons.

Sarma interacted with the parents of 40 children and two adults who were trafficked from 10 villages in Chirang district bordering Bhutan and subsequently rescued from Sikkim recently by an Assam Police team led by Special DGP, LR Bishnoi. 

The chief minister also assured the parents that the government in its bid to assuage their economic hardships would include them in Arunodoi beneficiary list.

Cheques  worth  Rs 20,000 each from BTC were presented to each parent whose wards were trafficked but subsequently rescued.
He also said that the government would take appropriate steps to send the children to schools with the recommendation of the CWC (children welfare committee) of Chirang.
