Guwahati, August 12: A Clean-up drive on 75th Independence Day is being organised from 08:00 AM to 11:00 AM by a group of environmentally conscious organisations and people at Deepor Beel in the city to raise the level awareness about importance of preservation of the only Ramsar Site in the state and the threats posed to it.
The issue needs urgent attention and this group has planned this programme with various other activities too. It will start from a zero-waste clean-up drive from which the wastes will be segregated and sent to recycling directly.
A photo exhibition will be there displaying the photo collections from the villagers showing a story on the history of Deepor Beel. Minangka Deka will be doing a Mime Act which will be followed by discussion sessions by professors and scientists, felicitation of village conservationists like the wife of Koliya Boro, Haati bondhu, Lokhindor Teron, Hareswar Tumung, Bijoy Rabha, Pradip Kalita.
The demand for shifting of the railway track from Deepor Beel will be the topic of the discussion and the various issues related to that. An eatery called ‘Plateful’ is sponsoring the refreshments for the event for which people are urged strictly to bring their own cutlery or else the food won’t be served, this is done to make the event zero waste
The event will wrap up with a ‘symbolic’ photo session. The collaborators of the programme are The Midway Journey, Earthful Foundation and Fridays for Future, Climate Front India & Xondhan.
