Guwahati, Dec 2: Assam government suspended three officials of the Assam inland water transport (IWT) department for non-maintenance of records and details of passengers travelling on a ferry from Nimatighat (Jorhat) to Kamulibari ghat in Majuli today.
“Manual tickets were issued to a few passengers without maintaining records/details due to the server downtime of the e-ticketing server. Later on, one such passenger jumped into the Brahmaputra and has remained untraceable,” an official statement said.
“In this regard, as per the direction of transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, the transport department has suspended Ashim Kumar Baruah, junior engineer, IWT Jorhat subdivision with immediate effect. Alok Gogoi and Bitupon Boruah, both section assistants, have also been placed under suspension for not maintaining details of passengers travelling in the ferry,” the statement added.
Assam Inland Water Transport Regulatory Authority chairperson, Vivekananda Phookan, has been directed to carry out an inquiry to ascertain facts and circumstances leading to the incident and related issues and submit a report on the same within 15 days.
The state government had, in the last week of September, put in place an Android-based e-ticketing system for the Majuli-Jorhat ferry service in view of the inconvenience faced by regular passengers on the route who had to queue up from the wee hours for tickets.
