Guwahati, Nov 24: The suspension of mobile internet/data services in seven districts of Meghalaya has been extended till 10-30 am on Saturday, according to a senior official. An official notification will be issued shortly.
In the wake of Tuesday wee hours firing incident at Mukroh village on Meghalaya-Assam boundary in which six lives were lost, Meghalaya government had imposed temporary suspension of mobile internet/data services as a precautionary measure for 48 hours from 10.30 am of Tuesday in the districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Meanwhile, uneasy calm prevailed in Shillong city ahead of the sit-in solidarity held here this afternoon. Everything looked normal at the Civil Hospital Junction where the proramme is being held. Shops were shut in the city’s man business hub in Police Bazar while a handful of security personnel are deployed in the area.
An NGO called Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Council (HITO) will be holding a ‘peaceful’ procession from Madan Iewrynghep, Fire Brigade to Assam House, Dhankheti on Saturday at 3pm to condemn and protest the indiscriminate firing by the Assam police and Forest Fuards at Mukroh, West Jaintia Hills which led to the death of five innocent people on Tuesday morning.
HITO will be organizing a candlelight vigil at Assam House after the peaceful procession. The HITO president, Donbok Dkhar informed that they will also announce a series of agitations on this day.
