Guwahati, Dec 10: The demand for introduction of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya is getting louder every passing day in view of indigenous ethnic groups in the state becoming apprehensive of threat of infiltration after the Central government enacted the Citizenship Amendment Act that will pave way for grant of citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Parsis and Buddhists who had migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Even as pressure groups on indigenous tribes have raised their voices demanding ILP, the leader of Opposition and Congress legislator, Dr Mukul Sangma  today Meghalaya Governor, Satya Pal Malik and urged him to persuade the Centre to implement ILP in the hill state without further delay.

Dr Sangma also urged the Governor to recall the principal (original) Meghalaya Residents’ Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Government amended the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act in 2020. However, Mukul Sangma said that the MRSSA 2017, which was enacted during the tenure of the previous Congress-led government in Meghalaya, should be recalled as the Act was more comprehensive.
