Guwahati, Dec 10: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today asked Assam Police to adopt zero tolerance towards criminals involved in illegal drugs trade in the state to safeguard the future of young generation.
During a meeting with Police and senior district administration officials from Golaghat and Nagaon district at the Assam Police Guest House at Kohora this evening, Sonowal took stock of law and order situation in the two districts which host large number of tourists coming from both within and outside the country to visit Kaziranga National Park (KNP). The meeting was also attended by the Director of Kaziranga National Park, P Shivkumar.
He asked the police officials to be very harsh in dealing with criminals involved in contraband drugs besides raising guard against wildlife hunters to safeguard the animals especially the one-horned rhino in Kaziranga National Park.
Sonowal while reviewing the steps taken for protection of one-horned rhinos in the KNP, also asked for information about the population of tiger and python in the National Park.
The Chief Minister underscored the need for protection of all the wetlands (beels) inside the KNP and called for a detailed study on under water vegetation in those water bodies. He also asked the authority to get a study done on the biodiversity of the KNP which is considered a biodiversity hotspot.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners of Golaghat and Nagaon districts, Bibhas Chandra Modi and Kabita Padmanabhan, SPs of both the districts Pushpa Raj Singh and Gaurav Abhijit besides a host of other officials.
