BPF moves HC against Governor’s decision on BTC 

Guwahati, Dec 18: After losing power in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) following the election held on December 7 and December 10 last, Hagrama Mohilary-led Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has moved the Gauhati High Court today against the Governor’s action of ignoring its request for a chance to prove its majority in the newly-elected BTC by virtue of being the single largest party.

In the petition, BPF sought the court’s intervention and complained that while forming the new BTC executive council, several constitutional provisions were violated.

The High Court after hearing both sides fixed December 22 for the next hearing and directed to maintain a status quo.
The BPF despite emerged as the single largest party in the just held BTC polls, could not get a majority. Out of the total of 40 seats in BPF won 17 seats.

The BPF led by Hagrama though sought a week’s time from the Governor to prove his majority, the latter accepted the claim of United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL)-BJP and Gana Shakti Party (GSP) coalition to form the next council. The coalition formed the executive council with 22 MLCs.

The UPPL bagged 12 seats, BJP got nine and GSP managed to win only one seat. Meanwhile, the lone Congress member of the BTC shifted allegiance to the BJP while one of the 17 BPF MLCs too has shifted allegiance to the BJP.
