Guwahati, Dec 18: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma paid rich tributes to legendary Khasi poet U Soso Tham on Death anniversary.
Remembering the poet Conrad tweeted, ‘On his 80th death anniversary, we pay tribute to the legendary U Soso Tham, the #Khasi poet laureate whose literary masterpieces spoke of the rich oral tradition of the Khasis. His work and great legacy is kept alive till today through our education system.’
Born in 1873 in Sohra, U Soso Tham was the first poet in Meghalaya to initiate secular literature with diction, both singular and genuine. U Soso Tham was also the first person to make use of Khasi idioms in a form taken mainly from English poetry. Tham is usually remembered for his beautiful poems and his poem ‘Ka Duitara Kshiar’ (The Golden Harp, 1925) – a compilation of poems, is one of the most distinguished works.
