GUWAHATI: Meghalaya Government has decided to begin random testing for COVID-19 from Saturday onwards from Byrnihat to Khanapara at the border of Assam.
The hill state government has also decided to clamp total curfew from Byrnihat upto Khanapara from 9 pm tonight till Monday morning.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong informed this following a review meeting held in Shillong to take stock of the COVID-19 situation in the state.
The meeting took stock of continuous surge in COVID-19 cases in Assam especially in the neighbouring city of Guwahati and decided to carry out random test in the particular area bordering Assam.
The particular stretch of National Highway from Khanapara to Byrnihat, marks the inter-state boundary between Assam (Kamrup Metropolitan district) and Meghalaya. Meghalaya government apprehends that in view of current lockdown in Kamrup metropolitan district in Assam, people from Assam side will cross over to Meghalaya to buy good and essentials which will lead to intermingling of both the people raising the risk of transmission of the virus.
Meghalaya has kept inter-state movement of people and vehicles barred excepting transportation of essentials and transshipping of patients through it to Guwahati.
