Assam to construct 119 high schools in tea estate by April 1 next

Guwahati, 1 August: Education department in Assam will construct 119 high schools in as many tea estates, some of which will be done by upgrading the existing ME schools in the tea estates.
“Construction work of 119 high schools will begin on October 2 at a whopping budget of Rupees 142.5 crore. Rupees 1.19 crore has been earmarked for each tea estate high school,” Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today.
“Such a massive move to build high schools in tea gardens in the State has never been taken up earlier. It’s the first mega project to better infrastructure in education sector in tea garden areas that is being undertaken since Independence,” Sarma said.
The PWD, he further informed, has already floated tenders for the project and that construction work of all the 119 schools will begin on Gandhi Jayanti this year.
“We will begin construction work on Gandhi Jayanti this year and the buildings will be ready in 6-7 months. We are hopeful of beginning classes in these facilities from the next academic session in April next year,” Sarma added.
