Tributes to Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya on death anniversary

Guwahati, Aug 6: Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today paid rich tributes to eminent writer-journalist and the first Jnanpith Award winning litterateur from Assam, Dr Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya on the occasion of his death anniversary.
CM Sonowal also paid tributes to the eminent writer and tweeted, ‘জ্ঞানপীঠ বঁটা বিজয়ী প্ৰথমগৰাকী অসমীয়া সাহিত্যিক ড° বীৰেন্দ্ৰ কুমাৰ ভট্টাচাৰ্যদেৱক মৃত্যু দিৱসত গভীৰ শ্ৰদ্ধাৰে সুঁৱৰিছোঁ। অসমীয়া সাহিত্য ক্ষেত্ৰত তেখেতৰ বিস্তৃত অৱদান চিৰস্মৰণীয় হৈ থাকিব।‘
Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya was one of the pioneers of modern Assamese literature. Bhattacharya was the first ever Assamese writer to receive the Jnanpith Award for his novel Mrityunjay in 1979. He was also honoured with Sahitya Akademi Award in Assamese in 1961 for his Assamese novel Iyaruingam. He served as the President of Asam Sahitya Sabha during 1983-1985.
