Poacher arrested with arms, ammunition in Nameri National Park

Guwahati, September 12: Forest personnel of Nameri National Park and Tiger Reserve in Sonitpur district of Assam have arrested a suspected poacher identified as Daya Khaklary (28) who was involved in illegal entry into the national park by using wooden country boat and with handmade guns with ammunition.

A patrol of forest personnel comprising forest officer Amrit Doley, forester Deep Kalita were on routine patrol along the course of Jia-Bhoroli river inside the Park on Friday at the instruction of Forest Range Officer Debashis Buragohain, when they spotted a group of suspected poachers on a country boat near Diji Nullah area at 14th Mile AP Camp area.

Most of the members of the team of suspected poachers fled at the sight of the forest patrol team by jumping into the river while Daya Khaklary was apprehended by the forest personnel.

The apprehended miscreant hails from No.1 Dimapur, Jali area located in the vicinity of the park. The patrol team seized one wooden boat with two handmade guns loaded with ammunition and other incriminating items.

The miscreants were also carrying for match boxes, kerosene oil, explosive powder, mixture of chemical etc., to the core area of the Tiger Reserve and National Park.

The authority in Nameri Park has suspected that the group of miscreants tried to enter the park for hunting wild animals which are protected under ‘The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972’. The park has a treasure trove of deer, wild boar, gaur, elephant, Royal Bengal Tiger etc.

The apprehended person was booked under the Section 9, 27, 29, 30, 31, 32, 35, 38(V), 39, 52 read with section 2 (14, 16, 21, 24-A, 33, 35, 36, 37) of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and an offence has been registered at Nameri Wildlife Range of Nameri Tiger Reserve and National Park and further investigation is going on.

The accused was produced before Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sonitpur and further action was taken up.
